Neil Walker's 9440 RALS, a portable, self-contained, rechargeable LED area light, is a game-changer in the field of area lighting. This innovative design, which is part of Peli's Remote Area Lighting System (RALS) family, offers a sustainable and efficient alternative to traditional, fuel-driven lighting systems.
The 9440 RALS was inspired by the success of the 9430 LED battery-powered area work light. The design team, led by Neil Walker, aimed to create a product that was not only portable and quick to deploy, but also capable of providing high light output at over two meters. The result is a product that is compact, lightweight, and easy to set up, offering a high light output that can easily clear obstacles.
What sets the 9440 RALS apart from conventional lighting systems is its unique properties. Traditional area lighting systems are powered by noisy, polluting, fuel-driven generators that emit toxic fumes and heat, posing serious safety problems on job sites. In contrast, the 9440 RALS allows users to illuminate a large work area without the fuel consumption, noise, and air pollution associated with traditional lighting towers.
The 9440 RALS is produced and manufactured entirely in the United Kingdom. The control boards and light engines are produced using the latest electronic pick and placement machines, while the plastic components are produced using the latest 200-ton injection molding machines. This high-quality machinery ensures a finished product that is not only excellent in quality but also strong enough to withstand the harshest of environments.
The design of the 9440 RALS began in early 2009 and, after 18 months of design and tooling, the product was launched globally in August 2010. One of the main challenges faced by the design team was to meet high criteria while ensuring that the product was stable in all environments and weighed less than 7kg.
The 9440 RALS has been recognized for its innovative design and contribution to societal wellbeing, winning the prestigious Platinum A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2012. This award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, genius, and contribute to societal wellbeing.
